Inquiry twelve

This one, for determination: When the circus lost its best elephant handler, who took over?

You get three chances.

  1. Does it have something to do with the movie Water For Elephants? Because I never saw that movie, and don't really intend to. =/

  2. ...No. It does not. Such asinine pop-culture references would not help me in any way.

  3. Heh. Good to know.

    Is it Sophie?

  4. Indeed it is. On to the next...eventually. Damn, I can't think straight...

  5. You feeling alright? You've been kind of off lately...

  6. No...I'm not...Emilia's still gone, my children have all but left, and it turns out Isabella is alive - and Indoctrinated.

  7. I'm sorry. It's not for you to worry about.

  8. I worry anyway. No one deserves to face this shit on their own, and from the looks of it, you've kinda got a lot on your plate.

  9. I...I absolutely refuse to allow you to worry. This, this in particular, right now, this is my fight, my job, and I can't...get...close, I suppose. I guess.

  10. -blinkblink- Okay, now you're REALLY starting to worry me. First of all, isolating yourself when there are people who are in the know and willing to lend a hand is beyond stupid - it's dangerous to your sanity. Second, what else do I have to do with my time but give runners emotional support? It's what I came here to do, and I am going to do it.

What do you mean you can't get close?

  11. I was given the job to see how the Runners think. If I get...close...I'll get biased, I'll give hints, and I might get confident enough to go charging in and try to save Emilia myself, and get myself killed.

I'm not a Runner, Hakurei Ryuu. I'm a desperate man, in one place, who's lost as much as anyone. Perhaps more than some. How can I make friends with the pawns of a pawn?

  12. I'm not a runner either, but I still count myself among them. Common enemy, you know? I used it there as a general term for those involved in the slenderman situation. Not necessarily targeted, just... involved.

I asked you once before if your observation of runners was out of any sort of maliciousness, and you said no. Therefore, we're on the same side. Being scientific and unbiased is all well and good, but in a situation like this, I think whatever benefits emotional stability has a higher priority. If you're just as lost as the rest of us, trying to maintain an illusion of separateness is probably a bad idea.

"Pawns of a pawn"? I am suddenly reminded of Dare 2 Die, but I'll keep the phrase in mind. But making friends isn't something you deliberately do or deliberately avoid, y'know.

  13. No, no, no, no...we're not on the same side. We're not. It's not malicious, but it's not - it's...it's for him, he's the one who's kidnapped our loved ones, he's making us do this...I'm not...lost. I cannot...get close.

Pawns of a pawn, yes. This is a means to an end. Everyone who answers my inquiries - means to an end. And what am I but means to an end? I'm not even doing this for myself, or for Emilia, my children, I'm doing this for him, for the Businessman...and so I avoid making friends, and I implore you not to try and make me one.
